Writing in Google Docs and want to skip the download step? The Google Docs to HTML converter takes a direct paste.

What the converter keeps, and what it drops

Kept as semantic HTML

  • Word heading styles (Heading 1–6) → h1–h6
  • Bold, italic, strikethrough, superscript and subscript
  • Bulleted and numbered lists, including nesting
  • Tables with merged cells (colspan / rowspan)
  • Hyperlinks, footnotes and endnotes, line breaks
  • Pictures, embedded as base64 (switch off above to drop them)

Dropped on purpose

  • Fonts, font sizes, colours, highlight and underline
  • Paragraph spacing, indents and alignment
  • Page layout: margins, headers, footers, page breaks, columns
  • Text boxes, shapes, SmartArt and comments
  • Every class and inline style Word would have written

The result is markup that takes the styling of whatever page you paste it into. If you need a hook for your own CSS, type a class name in the Custom CSS class field and it is added to every element in the output.

Frequently asked questions

Which file types can I convert?
Word .docx files up to 20 MB. Older .doc files are not supported: open them in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and save as .docx first. Google Docs users can also paste directly into the Google Docs to HTML converter instead of downloading a file.
Why does the HTML look plain compared with my document?
That is the point of the tool. It maps document structure (headings, lists, tables, emphasis, links) to the matching HTML elements and leaves presentation out, so the text takes on the styles of the site or email template you paste it into. Word's own "Save as Web Page" does the opposite and writes hundreds of lines of CSS and Office XML to reproduce the look.
My headings came out as plain paragraphs. Why?
The converter recognises Word's built-in Heading 1, Heading 2… styles. Text that was made big and bold by hand, without applying a heading style, is still a paragraph as far as the document is concerned. Apply the heading styles in Word and convert again.
How are images handled?
Pictures are embedded directly in the HTML as base64 data URIs, so the file is self-contained but can be large. Switch off "Include images" to strip them and upload the pictures to your CMS or image host separately, which is usually the better choice for a website.
Is the document uploaded to a server?
No. The .docx is read and converted by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there is nothing to delete afterwards.
Can I convert tracked changes or comments?
Comments are dropped. Tracked changes are converted as the document currently reads, which means insertions are included and deletions are left out. Accept or reject changes in Word first if you need a specific version.
